Senior Citizens Are Living Longer and Better Than Ever Before

June 16th, 2015 by John Wilson

Many seniors in senior care services are living longer.

Senior care services are seeing greater longevity.

According to a number of sources, those born after 2012 have a projected life expectancy of 78.8 years, which is higher than it’s been in decades. There are a number of reasons for this, including declines in mortality rates for cancer and heart disease. This is great news, but it will also increase the need for quality living assistance serving OKC and the surrounding areas.

Other Countries Top the List

While it seems the average life expectancy of 78.8 years is a long time, especially considering a woman’s life expectancy of 81.2 years versus 76.4 years for men, there are 32 countries that outrank the United States. In fact, according to the World Health Organization, Japan tops the list with an overall life expectancy of 84.6 years. Despite the fact the United States ranks as number 33 on the list, the fact is seniors are living much longer everywhere, requiring an increase in senior living communities to accommodate the growing aging population.

The Number of Centennials Has Increased

If you look at the number of people who are reaching 100 years old, you will find the numbers are rapidly increasing. In fact, the number of centennials living has doubled every 13 years. At this rate, there will be more than four million individuals age 100 and over by the year 2060. This is an astounding statistic! When you consider the life expectancies 100 years ago, which were 56 years for women and 52 years for men, this increase in longevity is amazing.

A Larger Elder Population Requires Senior Living Communities

As the number of aging individuals increases, the need for senior care services will also rise proportionately. Individuals who are living longer will likely require more medical care. This is why it’s so important to ensure there is quality living assistance serving OKC and the surrounding areas. Good senior living communities will do more than simply give the elderly a place to call home; they will create an enjoyable atmosphere that allows the aging to enjoy their elder years to their fullest.

As individuals get older, it becomes more difficult for them to live alone. With the number of people who are living longer rising each year, senior care services will also have to expand. Aging seniors need quality medical care and assistance with their daily routine. Senior living communities in OKC and across the country provide an ideal environment for aging individuals so they can not only live longer, but live healthier and more productive lives.
